Hole in the Wall
Chapter 1- Dazzling Phenomenon
Alexandria (Zan) Washington
The twin sisters’ bedroom
door burst open. A medium-height figure walked slowly through the open doorway.
Brittany and Bridget awoke with a start. Their eyes rounded with fear when they
noticed the figure in the doorway. Both girls sat up and trembled, fearing for
their lives. The figure started towards them, shuffling and sniffling as it
came closer. Brittany and Bridget scooted backwards, both alarmed by the
strange presence. Bridget turned in the darkness and groped for their lamp.
When she found the lamp, she quickly switched it on. As light flooded the
bedroom, Bridget caught glimpse of a strange swirling on the wall, out of the
corner of her eye. She turned towards the wall and released an ear-piercing
scream. There was an enormous hole in their wall, gaping and menacing. Bridget
ran back to her bed where her sister still sat, her face hidden in her hands
and her body trembling. Bridget opened her mouth to tell her sister what she’d
seen, but she suddenly remembered the figure that had been in their bedroom.
She looked around the room, but there was no sign of the figure. Although she
could not see it, Bridget knew that the figure was still there. She glanced at
the wall once more, startled to find that the hole was growing larger with
every second. Bridget frantically tapped her sister’s shoulder, trying to get
her attention so that she could see the mysterious hole. Brittany wouldn’t
budge; she was terrified and knew she would immediately have a panic attack if
she looked up. Bridget started to cry, her mouth quivering as she fought to
control her emotions. Suddenly, red eyes flashed in the dimly lit doorway.
Bridget screamed, her heart leaping with terror. The figure gradually appeared,
taking on full shape. The figure became a dog; it was a Doberman, with a large
head and an abnormally large body. Bridget stared at the dog, noticing
something else odd about it. The dog seemed quite normal, yet something was
definitely peculiar about it. Bridget couldn’t figure out exactly what was odd
about the dog, so she risked staring for a moment longer. Shock rippled through
her body as she realized what was wrong with the Doberman. Instead of four
short, stubby paws, the dog had two paws in the back and two pale human hands
in the front. The dog also had glittering red eyes, and teeth so white they
glistened in the light. Bridget screamed, frightening Brittany and causing her
to jerk upright. When Brittany caught a glimpse of the dog, she hollered and
propelled herself backwards, slamming into their center bedroom wall. The dog
stepped closer, sneering and twisting its right hand. Bridget was frozen with
shock, white terror seizing her limbs. Brittany grabbed her sister’s arm and
pulled her unto their bed. Both girls scooted back towards the center wall,
eyes trained on the dog. When their backs touched the wall, Brittany and
Bridget glanced at each other, both realizing that they were trapped. They
began to scream, calling for their mother. The Doberman suddenly lifted its
head, silencing Brittany and Bridget. To the twin’s horror, the dog began to speak:
“Fear ye! Future failures… Ye cowardly children! Your doom is quite near. Know
this: your doom will be passed unto your children, and unto your children’s
children. Thus, a message from The Greater. Pay heed! This do ye well,
children.” The girls stared, frozen in horror. The Doberman’s left hand twitched
as it prepared to take another step, but before it could lift its paw, a hand
shot out of the swirling hole in the wall. It grasped the dog’s collar tightly,
provoking a whimper from it. Brittany and Bridget yelped, cries of utter
disbelief. The Doberman was yanked into the hole, away from the earth, and into
a place of immortality, a place where no one ever speaks again. With a flash
and an ear-piercing screech, the hole disappeared.
“Girls! Sheesh, one
at a time! My hair’s black now and I prefer it that way.” Naomi Ryans, the
twin’s mother rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Mom, I honestly saw this
hideous, red-eyed dog walk through our door!” Bridget endeavored to explain to
her mother, eyes rounded. “We both saw a really insanely weird hole in the
middle of our wall,” Brittany chimed in. Naomi laughed at the girls. “Yeah
right, and your father’s coming back to us tomorrow. What am I, insane? I have
no idea how you girls thought I would believe a biggie like that. I do have to
admit, you guys have great imagination.” Bridget giggled, noticing their
mother’s sarcasm. Brittany rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “Mom, this was
real, no biggie, I promise! So anyway, the dog got snatched up and-“Naomi
looked up at Brittany and put a finger on her daughter’s lips. “Honey, hush for
a while. You know I have morning conferences online! You guys can tell me your
story later, I promise.” Both girls’ eyes widened. “Mommy! Please listen!” The
twins cried out in unison. Naomi shook her head and motioned towards the
kitchen door. “Nope, not another word, chicas! Exit left, por favor!” The twins
tiptoed from the kitchen, hearts heavy and feeling quite nervous about
returning to their bedroom.
